Celebrating my 21st birthday at 21 Newcastle and Foxton Locks Lodges
At the end of October I celebrated my 21st birthday. My birthday was on a Sunday so I had a few drinks with friends on the Saturday night before spending my birthday with my family and boyfriend. My Mam and Dad had booked us all a table at the restaurant 21 in Newcastle which they kept as a surprise. I knew we were going for a meal but had no idea where until we arrived and even when we got there it took me a while to realise they had cleverly chosen this restaurant because of the name. I was really excited though because it’s a restaurant I’d heard a lot about and one I wouldn’t normally go to unless it was for a special occasion.
21 describe themselves as “a classic bistro” and I loved the look of the whole menu. They use amazing, good quality, seasonal ingredients to create un-fussy dishes that are absolutely delicious. I was really impressed by the atmosphere too; I’d expected it would be sort of posh and fussy but the restaurant was a lovely, relaxed place to eat but little touches, such as taking your coats at the door and bread and olives on the table, keep it feeling nicely upmarket.
We all chose from the Sunday menu which I thought was good value at 3 courses for £24.50. For starters I went for the Warm Salad of Smoked Black Pudding and Soft Poached Egg which absolutely delicious and the perfect size so I could still enjoy my main. For this I chose roast pork which came with apple sauce, crackling, and all the usual Sunday dinner trimmings. This too was delicious. Usually for dessert I go for a big pudding but as I was so full from my main, and feeling a little sickly from my night out on the Saturday, I had blackberry sorbet which was just perfect.
I was really impressed with my experience at 21 will definitely be finding an excuse to visit again, I especially want to try more from the main menu.
The next day my boyfriend and I were up early to travel down to Leicestershire for a few days away. We’d chosen to stay at Foxton Locks Lodges after hearing about it from family who’d stayed there and it definitely lived up to expectation! We chose the smallest lodge which sleeps two but we had so much space. The lodge comes with a fully fitted kitchen, dining table, a cosy lounge area with a fire, a bathroom with shower and freestanding bath, a really comfy king-size bed, and a private hot-tub out on the decking. It was all decorated beautifully and felt so luxurious.
The lodges are really near a canal and Foxton Locks and we spent a bit of time out walking and exploring the area and nearby towns and villages. The countryside here was really beautiful, especially as it was autumn, and there are loads of little villages full of gorgeous, old houses. We also went into Leicester one day and visited the Space Centre and did a bit of shopping. However, we loved the lodge so much we spent most of our time in it; cosying up to watch TV, playing Scrabble, cooking together, and spending evenings in the hot tub with a glass of prosecco.
It was a perfect way to spend my birthday with my boyfriend and I was so sad to come home – I can’t wait to go back!
